The Power of Partnership: TUM Academia Day at the Munich Security Conference

On February 15, 2025, Technische Universität München (TUM) and UnternehmerTUM co-hosted Academia Day, a major side event of the Munich Security Conference. This gathering showcased how powerful partnerships and bold ideas are critical for driving climate innovation forward. The event brought together a global network of innovators from prestigious institutions like the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship, and Breakthrough Energy.

The day's program highlighted the vital role of global collaboration. Ashley Grosh from Breakthrough Energy and Professor William Chueh from Stanford delivered keynote speeches on leveraging global ecosystems to build climate ventures. Ashley Grosh emphasized, “The ecosystem is like an engine—partnerships and resource sharing drive it.”

A key highlight was the TUM Climate Ventures (TCV) course, which empowers students and scientists to transform breakthrough technologies into climate-focused startups. The participants presented their innovative solutions to an expert jury. The top honor went to Valoron, a team praised for their solution's "great potential to fill a pressing industry gap."

Three thought-provoking panels delved into the challenges and opportunities in climate innovation:

  • Global Climate Ventures: Experts discussed the critical need to shift focus from invention to commercialization and to strengthen startup-corporate collaborations.
  • Campus-Driven Innovation: This panel explored how to balance academic research with commercial revenue, the role of strategic investors, and the need for Germany to foster more risk-taking and talent attraction.
  • Scaling Academic Impact: This session focused on using campuses as "living labs" to de-risk new technologies and using global collaboration to unlock new opportunities.

Academia Day 2025 was more than a conference; it was a powerful reminder that "a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world." The event successfully united a global community dedicated to turning climate innovation into tangible, real-world action.
